Mazingira Day 2026: Bulkstream Nairobi Workplace Clean-Up

On Saturday 10 October, Mazingira Day 2026, the Bulkstream Nairobi team came together for a clean-up exercise within our company premises.

In coveralls and hard hats, the team picked up plastic and other litter along the perimeter fence, wall and drainage channel. Keeping the site clean is part of how we manage our waste and look after everyone who works here.

About Mazingira Day

Mazingira is the Kiswahili word for environment, and Mazingira Day falls on 10 October every year. It is a public holiday under Kenya’s Public Holidays Act (Cap. 110). The name came in with the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act, 2024, which President William Ruto signed into law in April 2024.

The date was originally Moi Day, after Kenya’s second President, Daniel Moi, and was later known as Huduma Day (2019) and Utamaduni Day (2020). Kenya marked its first Mazingira Day on 10 October 2024.

The idea is for every Kenyan to take part in conservation activities, including tree planting, as part of the Government’s drive to restore the country’s forests faster. Government Spokesperson Charles Owino described it as a call for Kenyans to take practical environmental action at home, in their communities and institutions, and at work.

Mazingira Day 2026 across Kenya

This year, Mazingira Day was the last day of Mazingira Week 2026, which ran from 5 to 10 October under the theme “Our Environment, Our Responsibility: Collective Action for Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship”. Environment Cabinet Secretary Dr Deborah Barasa has called for a whole-of-society effort that brings in communities, development partners and the private sector. “Our environment is our responsibility,” she said.

The week was coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry and included tree growing in schools and highway greening. National Clean-Up Day was on 9 October, with clean-ups planned in all 47 counties, and the Government set a target of 17.24 million trees for the week.

Mazingira Week is meant to speed up the 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme, which started in 2022 and runs to 2032. It aims to raise Kenya’s national tree cover to 30% by then.

Waste rules for businesses

For businesses like ours, waste management is also a legal duty. Under Kenya’s Sustainable Waste Management Act, 2022, every public and private sector organisation has to separate its non-hazardous waste into organic and non-organic streams. Private sector organisations must also provide separate bins on their premises for organic, plastic and general dry waste.

Environment at Bulkstream

Our Environmental Management System is certified to ISO 14001:2015, and our environmental and social impact commitments include:

  • Handling systems that are free of noise, dust and spillage. Cargo is discharged through enclosed overhead systems and conveyors, and dust extraction keeps dust emissions to a minimum.
  • Less packaging waste, by encouraging bulk delivery and bagging only when needed, in the right bag size.
  • Rail transport, which on average cuts the carbon footprint for the same tonnage by 90% compared with road transport.

Our newly commissioned SGR Edible Oil Loading Station moves edible oil by rail instead of road to lower carbon emissions.

In August 2025, we took part in the East African Ocean Pre-Festival Walk and Beach Clean-Up for the second year running.

Thank you to everyone at Bulkstream Nairobi who joined the clean-up.
